The Flying Projector

The Flying Projector is our heartfelt initiative to bring authentic cinema to communities that have never experienced it, using film as a tool for social connection and creative discovery.

Task

To inspire rural communities to discover art cinema, express themselves, and build confidence through hands-on filmmaking experiences.

The Flying Projector was born from a desire to restore cinema’s role as an art form and a mirror to society, rather than just a source of entertainment or commercial spectacle. Inspired by the belief that filmmaking should reflect reality and nurture honest expression, the project set out to reach communities untouched by mainstream cinema, aiming to cultivate appreciation for authentic storytelling and creative collaboration

In July 2019, the journey began with a small team, united by the mission to introduce art cinema to underprivileged villagers who had never experienced movies beyond formulaic blockbusters. The team faced skepticism, as convincing people to pause their daily routines and embrace unfamiliar films without the usual glamour was no easy feat. Yet, their dedication to social upliftment and the transformative power of film kept them moving forward

The first destination was Bhambarde, a remote village whose residents had never visited a cinema hall. The team overcame logistical hurdles—lack of equipment, screens, and even basic infrastructure—by resourcefully gathering what was needed and incentivizing participation with popular film screenings. Gradually, curiosity overcame reluctance, and villagers gathered to watch and, eventually, to take part in the filmmaking process themselves

As the project unfolded, villagers were invited to step into various roles—acting, singing, managing equipment, or directing—each finding a new sense of confidence and creative expression. The experience fostered community bonds, broke down inhibitions, and allowed participants to see themselves and their stories reflected on screen, sparking newfound interest in cinema as both an art and a means of self-discovery

The Flying Projector’s true triumph lay in empowering these communities to appreciate and create films that resonated with their own realities. By nurturing local talent and encouraging dialogue about art cinema, the project not only broadened horizons but also inspired villagers to pursue their passions, helping to bridge the gap between niche and mainstream storytelling in Indian cinema
